What Is an AR Pistol?

While every state varies and their laws of firearms are different, ATF’s regulations state that an AR Pistol must have the following to be considered legal to own.

  1. The barrel has to be no more than 16 inches in length
  2. Cannot be classified as a “rifle” thus can’t have a rifle stock
  3. The overall length of the AR Pistol has to be no more than 26 inches in length
  4. Cannot have a vertical foregrip, must be angled

A lot of this may sound a bit simple to consider, on paper. When trying to actually make one, however, it can get very technical when you start making it.

So before you purchase an AR pistol kit, do your research to see how you can keep your AR pistol in the green.

Best AR Pistol to Have

Really to say which AR Pistol is the best model is really subjective. All shooters are different and their preferences and needs are different. However, some are more practical than others.

A 9mm AR would be the most practical and useful caliber to have in an AR Pistol. While having one in 5.56 NATO is an option, they’re also expensive.

Glock has made a variation of 9mm AR pistols that are built with quality in mind and compact maneuverability. All the components are built and legally made.

However, if you’re looking to build your own AR pistol, you’ll need an AR Pistol Kit, a workbench, and an AR-15 to work on. Keep in mind, you have to register the AR as a handgun and not a rifle if you want to keep this legal.

It will also help if you have some experience building, stripping, and cleaning firearms when tackling this project. There are plenty of helpful books and videos that explain it, however, it is best to take classes.

What Are the Pros and Cons of an AR Pistol?

The idea of a compact AR is that they’re very easy to handle and lightweight in comparison to a rifle. However, with every modification to a weapon, there is a trade-off and some disadvantages to take into consideration.

To get the bad news out of the way first, since you can’t have a rifle stock on this, otherwise, it be considered an SBR (short-barreled rifle), you need to use a handgun brace.

This strange replacement might be awkward at first, as while you can shoulder it like a rifle, it might not be the most comfortable way to shoot.

Another obvious issue is the lack of range one would get from this as opposed to a regular AR-15 rifle. Even more so if using pistol rounds instead of rifle rounds. Though this is assuming you are aware of the trade-off.

Lastly, the weapon can’t have any attachments like a vertical foregrip. It has to be angled, otherwise, it can’t be considered a pistol. Unless you want ATF to give you that tax stamp and pay a fee, keep that in mind.

However, despite all of this, you can expect to have an easier time using an AR Pistol in compact areas. This makes close-quarters combat easier and can get through doors without having to angle your weapon as much.

Being small also means it’s lightweight, so fatigue is less common carrying an AR Pistol over an AR rifle. 

Probably the biggest advantage is that it’s not limited to what caliber of rounds you can make your AR pistol in. Between the options of using 9mm to going as big as a .308, the versatility in these weapons is truly remarkable.

Should You Start Building an AR Pistol?

This all boils down to what you’re really after and what you plan to have an AR Pistol for. The option of having a compact rifle-like firearm for personal defense sounds good, though ask yourself if it’s neccesary.

There’s a lot of red tape that you have to remember when you start making one, as even the smallest changes can decide whether you get to keep it without a hitch have to pay a fine.

Bolt-Action Rifles 

A bolt-action rifle is one of the easiest types of rifles to understand. A simple, small metal handle sticks out of the right side of the weapon — known as the bolt. By pulling the bolt upward, backward, and forward, you eject a cartridge, load a new round, and close the chamber for firing. 

Bolt-action rifles are fantastic for accuracy and ease of use. This makes them extremely popular hunting rifles. They’re also preferred by snipers and marksman, with many US military rifles based on old-school bolt-action rifles. 

But perhaps the biggest advantage of a bolt-action rifle is its durability. It’s hard to beat simplicity — and the simple style of bolt-action rifles means they rarely malfunction. 

The only problem with them is that they’re a bit hard for newbies. The trigger hand has to leave the trigger to move the bolt, so a shooter will need to regrip their trigger hand and re-aim. 

Lever-Action Rifles 

You’re probably used to seeing lever-action rifles in old cowboy movies. This is accurate since they’re one of the first designs ever used for rifles. Winchester is the most legendary manufacturer of lever-action rifles. 

The “lever” in question is a loop-shaped handle underneath the trigger, which rotates away from the rifle, ejecting cartridges from the chamber. Reversing that action locks your next cartridge in. 

The major advantage of lever-action rifles is the classic aesthetic. With them, you also get the advantage of learning the legendary “spin-cock”. The major disadvantage is that some people consider them outdated, expensive, and a bit inaccurate. 

Semi-Automatic Rifles 

Semi-automatic rifles are one of the newest designs of rifles around. A semi-rifle only needs to have its action set once. After that, the gun’s action discharges rounds on its own after every release of the trigger. 

Because of this main feature, many semi-automatic rifles fire quicker than other kinds of rifles. This makes them efficient hunting rifles, and also a common design for assault rifles. 

Because of their quickness, semi-automatics are often considered the best design for home defense. While rifles are built for long-range usage, the ability to shoot many rounds without having to manually chamber new rounds makes it useful for close-quarters combat in worst-case scenarios. 

The main disadvantage of semi-automatic rifles is reliability. Because they use a more complicated mechanism, they’re more likely to suffer from jams and failures. Their complication also makes them tough to fix yourself. 

The quickness of firing comes in handy when necessary. But firing quickly increased your chances of rifle failure. 

Pump-Action Rifles 

The pump-action is most associated with shotguns. (Speaking of which, check out the different types of shotguns for more information.) However, many rifles are also made with a pump-action design. 

The pump-action design consists of a slide mechanism around the barrel that is “pumped” to eject the old cartridge and lock the new one into place. This is a great advantage for the pump-action rifles because the pumping isn’t done by the trigger hand. This makes them more efficient than bolt-action rifles.

This efficiency makes pump-actions popular for hunting. 

A major disadvantage of pump-action rifles is that they are considered slow to load (cartridges must be inserted individually, which can be difficult and slow for newbies). However, the tubes of pump-action rifles can usually hold many rounds, which can come in handy. 

Break-Action Rifles

The break-action rifle is a very back-to-basics gun. They’re single-shot guns, so you’re only going to get one shot out of the time before you need to reload. You “break” the action open like a hinge, and load the new round in. 

The major advantage of break-action rifles is that the extreme simplicity of them makes them easy to maintain. It’s also almost impossible to fire these guns through a cartridge-loading mishap since the gun practically comes in half every time you load a cartridge.

So, you’ve been thinking about owning a shotgun, have you? If you have, then it couldn’t hurt to brush up on your firearm knowledge. Those new to gun ownership probably don’t realize the complexity of the shotgun as a firearm.

Pump Action

In the United States alone, 40% of people own a gun or know someone who owns one. Of that number, most people probably own a shotgun or two, the most popular of which is the pump-action. They are a favorite among the public, dating back to 1884, when John Browning invented the infamous Winchester 1897 model. 

Over the years, the pump-action rifle has not lost its luster among gun experts because it is relatively easy to load and fire. With the pump-action, you slide the action upwards and back down again.

By doing this, you manually pump the shells into the chamber to shoot. At the same time, the gun expels the wasted ammunition onto the ground. 

Fun Fact: When you “pump” the rifle, it makes the classic noise heard on any television show where the character re-cocks the gun. 

Depending on your style of a pump-action shotgun, you should be able to fit between 3-8 rounds. The only downside to this gun is that the firing speed is a tad slow.

That is because every time you fire a shot, you have to pump the action. Otherwise, there is no ammo in the barrel. So your speed depends solely on how fast you can eject the old shell, cock the gun, and load new ammo. 

That said, the pump-action is one of the best shotguns for versatility. People use this weapon for a variety of reasons, like:

  • Home intruders
  • Military purposes
  • Law enforcement purposes
  • Hunting

The pump-action shotgun is as reliable as it is cost-effective. You can pretty much guarantee the gun will fire so long as you ensure you slide the pump down to the bottom.

If you do not do this, then the old shell will not release, and nothing will load. That is short-stroking, and you want to avoid it at all costs. That said, because of the easiness of firing a pump-action shotgun, it has become a top favorite to protect the household. 

Break Action

If you are looking to buy a shotgun that is a bit more reliable, then you want a break action. These types of guns don’t short-stroke, and they won’t jam as much as other shotguns. 

Break-action shotguns are one of the most classic kinds you can buy. In fact, if you have ever watched a television show set out in the West or on the Prairie, you can bet the main character is using a break-action rifle. 

The name “break action” came about because these guns break at the breech, displaying the area where you will load your ammo. You then close it up and fire your shot. Very simple and easy to use.

However, you can only fire one or two pellets, depending on whether your shotgun has a single barrel or a double barrel. That means your reload time is going to be slower than other guns because you have to fire, unhinge, fill the cartridge, and snap it back. 

Aside from those flaws, the break-action is dependable and best used for hunting. People use break actions or home defense, but there are a few points to consider before choosing a break-action for that purpose.

One of the main key points is the long barrel of the shotgun. If you have to cut corners in a house to get to the intruder, it could make your situation more problematic. So, most people stick to hunting wild games with the break-action and protecting their home with a pump-action. 

Semi-Automatic

If you don’t want to fuss around reloading and re-cocking your gun after you fire a few shots, then a semi-automatic shotgun is for you. With this shotgun, all you have to do is pull the trigger (and keep pulling it).

It will fire bullet after bullet with relative ease until the clip is empty. Here is how this works: the gun implements the force it takes to fire pellets to continue expelling ammo rapidly. 

The semi-automatic shotgun is also a favorite for home defense. When you are in a stressful situation that requires action, you don’t want to worry about reloading your gun.

The semi-automatic erases those concerns with a high amount of dependability. And, if that doesn’t sell you, remember that the Marines Corps has dubbed the semi-automatic shotgun their firearm of choice. The main reason for this is because they are so reliable. 

How To Use a Shotgun

Studies show that out of every 100,000 people, 11 die because of firearms. While many of these deaths are due to violence and homicide, many of them are also accidents.

There are quite a few people who shoot guns without the proper training. Learning about the different types of shotguns won’t give you enough know-how to go out and start shooting. One of the most critical elements of firearms is knowing how to handle them safely. 

To start, you need protective gear such as goggles and earplugs. The gun will be close to your face and ears, and when it goes off, it can damage your hearing.

Along with that, remember to keep the barrel of your gun pointed upward. Never point your gun toward someone, and never put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

When it is time to shoot, put the butt (back end) of the gun on your shoulder, keep your feet hip-width apart, and glue your cheek to the side of your shotgun.

From there, you should aim, turn the safety off, and only then should you fire. There is extreme kickback with shotguns. Because of this, putting it against your chest and shoulders will limit the amount of force the weapon drives into your body.

It’s a great option if you’ve got a bit of experience with shooting handguns. It’s a great option for self-defense and works well for concealed carry if your state allows it.

In fact, this is the option often used by law enforcement. If you’re worried about the breakdown of the police force, you can depend on this for policing your own community.

The Shield refers to the enclosure in front of the trigger. This serves as an alternative place to keep your finger when not firing. It also prevents the risk of accidental fire.

Revolvers are a great option if you need to depend on fast-firing and fast loading. It’s a lightweight handgun (0.94 lbs) making it a perfect option for women shooters as well.

It has a heavy trigger pull which enhances safety and prevents accidental fire.

  • 1.875-inch barrel; overall length is 6.31 inches
  • Alloy frame and stainless steel barrel
  • Double Action Only

Remington R1 1911

I’m a big fan of 1911s and this is hands-down the best budget 1911 handgun I’ve come across.

The Colt 1911 was the standard pistol used by the U.S. military and is now a favorite among gun enthusiasts. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned shooter, I recommend owning the Remington R1 1911.

You can find the handgun for around $550. It’s a single-shot and semiautomatic gun.

Here are its best features:

  • 5-inch barrel; 8.5-inch overall length
  • Lightweight at 38.5 oz
  • Holds 7 rounds in the magazine
  • Adjustable front and rear sights

Ruger LCR

This is another one of my favorite revolvers which you can find between $450-$530. Ruger is one of the best sellers of handguns, and there’s no shortage of handguns on a budget in their arsenal.

The Ruger LCR is a great option for concealed carry or open-carry. The LCR has a polymer frame which is what contributes to its lightweight (13.5 oz).

It’s a 5-shot revolver with a metal barrel and cylinder. It’s a Double Action Only revolver and great for experienced shooters.

  • Comes in a variety of calibers: 38 Special, 22 Magnum, 357 Magnum, 9mm, and 22 LR

Glock 19X 9mm Pistol

Let’s return to budget 9mm handguns and move onto Glock. This has long been the preferred handgun manufacturer for the Austrian police.

I believe that every American should own at least one Glock pistol. Whether you’re a seasoned shooter or a newcomer, you should own the Glock 19x 9mm. You can find it for just under $600.

It’s an efficient pistol that’s durable and efficient. It’s one that you can use for continuous use should you need to protect yourself.

It’s coated with nPVD which prevents corrosion and is resistant to chemicals. The magazine comes with 17 rounds and you might get two extended magazines with your purchase.

For newcomers, you might also appreciate the efficiency of this pistol. You can take it to the range to practice before you need to use it for protection.

Taurus – PT-92

It’s a semi-automatic pistol with a short recoil. It’s a durable handgun that has a 3-position frame-mounted safety, making it easier to prevent accidental fire. 

You can choose between a Single-Action or Double-Action decocking level with the pistol.

These are my recommendations for budget handguns that are perfect for protecting yourself and your family. 

As I said in the introduction, I want you to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. If you’re an experienced shooter, add a few of these budget handguns to your arsenal.
